In the XVI century Mesón de Plata was a strong hold occupied by the military group of the New Spain and it helped to protect them from "La Guerra Chichimeca". It also provided security and a safeguard to the travelers of the time who were mostly dedicated to trade and harvests, and of course valuable shipments of silver from the mines of Zacatecas, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi, who traveled by the Real de la Tierra path, known today as the "Camino de la Plata" that took them to the capital of the viceroyalty.
It was also a rustic building that was transformed with the arrival of the friars "Carmelitas Descalzas"of the XVII century, who used it as a catechesis and training place for the redeemed indigenous that were taught different jobs, like the working on the land.
Later, with the initiative of Manuel Suárez Muñoz and with the help of physical and historical elements like technical documents, in 2010 UNESCO celebrated an unanimous agreement to declare Hotel Mesón de Plata, a Cultural heritage of Humanity site.
